Living Stories:  Contemporary Woodland Native American Art

 

Exhibit Open January 27th, 2025

This exhibit explores the evolving relationship between traditional Woodland Native American art and its contemporary interpretations, featuring the works of living artists who are pushing these traditions forward.

  • Martina Gauthier – Menominee

  • Le’Ana Asher – Ojibwe

  • Jim Terry – Ho-Chunk Nation

Living Stories is part of Art Design Chicago, a citywide collaboration initiated by the Terra Foundation for American Art that
highlights the city’s artistic heritage and creative communities. Living Stories is funded by the Terra Foundation for American Art.

Jennifer M. Stevens has weaved a creative life in the Arts nationally and internationally.  She is an Opera Singer, Classical Contemporary Composer, Contemporary Native American Artist, and Prehistoric Indigenous Potter and Educator.  Jennifer M. Stevens, is Oneida and Lakota, and known by her Oneida name, Waˀkohsi•yó  (Wah-goh-see-yoh) that means Peacock, “A Bird With A Beautiful Long Tail."  The symbolism of her name, inspires her life in the Arts and small business name, Waˀkohsi•yó ARTS.  Jennifer M. Stevens is far from ordinary, she is an innovator in the Arts; she continues to break barriers, and making presence as an Indigenous Woman in the Visual and Performing Arts world as a professional Artist, Singer, Composer, and Educator.
